Driving systemic change: Roadmap for five-pillar governance framework
This is the goal that we want to achieve. Once established, this structure will promote true democracy, ensure equality in voting, and be self-sufficient with no corruption. Regional representations will be promoted with meritocracy and pragmatism, and honesty will prevail in all government services. Honoring basic human rights, an independent judiciary, and value-based administration, along with social responsibility, will become part of our constitution. This will promote peaceful living, fearless expression, and equality among citizens. Religion, race, or gender-based bias will not prevail in this political paradigm.
Eliminating political corruption: Key to our recovery
Regarding fixing our economy in Sri Lanka, many of our politicians point the finger at 'corruption' in general terms and at the public. They do not point the finger at themselves and expose what they are up to. Of course, they will not, as they directly benefit from it. We discussed the term 'political corruption' recently. Political corruption is “the use of powers by government officials or their network contacts for illegitimate private gain.”
Our first and most urgent task is to eradicate political corruption. Only then can we hope to improve our economy
Equality of the vote is paramount for democracy
Over the last several decades, weaknesses and shortcomings in our ‘Tinkered’ Electoral System have allowed power-hungry, mediocre and nepotic politicians to rule the roost in our Parliament. The distortion of the ‘Equality of Ballot/Suffrage’ with complex constitutional provisions is the root cause. This election system needs to be fairest to all voters, with all voter preferences taken into account in a meritocratic order with no manipulations and a system that empowers the regional system. This proposal fulfils all the above fundamental needs to establish a true liberal democracy in our motherland.
The Encroachment Of Public Space’ By Our ‘Oligarchy’ Rulers & The Dissolution Of Democracy
In our motherland, under the conditions created by executive immunity, a small oligarchic group has thrived beyond all bounds. Ants have become elephants overnight. Their wealth expands through every illegal means, and their riches are safely sent outside national boundaries. There are no real authorities capable of stopping such actions. Anyone observing the sad plight of our nation can see how executive immunity can destroy a country. This is the challenge that democracies, attacked by oligarchies, face today. The issue of democratic space should be viewed and reviewed within this context.
This is why we need to mobilise all public power to install a constitution created by the direct participation of people through a genuinely representative constituent assembly. Approved by the public via a referendum. Such a constitution would ensure that it belongs to the people and aligns with values recognised worldwide as humane. We cannot deviate from these principles if we are to thrive as a democratic and developed country. For all these, it is essential that genuinely free and fair elections be held as required by the law without any delay.
Triumph of an Independent Commission – A Role Model
This election serves as a prime example of what can be achieved when an independent, professional organisation operates without political interference. Many aspects of governance should be managed by professionally selected boards, free from political appointees and parachuted secretaries, who might otherwise undermine the independence, integrity, and effectiveness of such bodies. Several independent commissions should operate under this model
