Sri Lanka's economic problems are largely related to political corruption that has occurred for decades and remains rampant even after the bankruptcy in 2022. The situation for ordinary people is worse than ever, bombarded with enormous indirect and direct taxes and ongoing corruption. Its resolution requires a political approach, but none of the leading contenders address this in their political rhetoric. Existing politicians have cunningly ensured that only a politician or a party currently in power can legitimately present a candidate for the upcoming presidential election. This has left ordinary people with virtually no viable options.
